Greenfield, Indiana, a nice day trip from Brownsburg, outside IndianapolisBrownsburg, Indiana is the kind of town in the Heartland of the United States that you just rarely feel like leaving. And when you do, well, Indianapolis, the glitzy capital of Indiana, is only a few miles eastward. Worthwhile day trips from Brownsburg abound, however, and it just takes a few moments’ research to plan one for yourself and your Brownsburg children or your significant sweetie-pie.

Day Trips from Brownsburg, Indiana

Danville, Indiana: Just over an hour to the west of Brownsburg, along the I-74, is the charming little town of Danville. There are a few cool historical sites in Danville, including a visit to the Hendricks County Museum, and Main Street itself has been declared a historic district. While you’re enjoying the town, plan on having lunch at The Mayberry Cafe. This little comfort food restaurant in Danville takes conscious pains to evoke your  nostalgic, small-time good feelings from The Andy Griffith show. There’s even a black and white parked outdoors.
Greenfield, Indiana: This lovely community, less than 50 miles east of Brownsburg as the crow flies, makes for a memorable day trip from Brownsburg. If you haven’t already visited the Riley House Restaurant, you really should. A trip to its historic halls provides a lovely meal at the erstwhile family home of beloved Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, the most famous of people from Greenfield. A great piece of planning on your part would be to go during the Riley Festival, and take your kids. The Greenfield downtown sector offers up lots of specialty shops for your sightseeing pleasure, too.
Indiana Live Casino and the Indiana Downs: This enormous facility is the biggest land-based casino in the entire Midwest. When you take this day trip from Brownsburg, don’t exhaust yourselves at the Bear Chase Golf Club or enjoying the great shopping in Shelbyville or restaurants in Shelbyville. You’ll want to save plenty of time to do the Indiana Downs horse races and the Indiana Live Casino justice. Shelbyville, Indiana, fortunately for residents of Brownsburg, is less than 100 miles away, and a straight shot southeast of Brownsburg on Interstate 74.
Putnam County: You can find many sightseeing treasures in and around Putnam County, less than a half hour in a straight line going southwest of Brownsburg. You could make Greencastle, Indiana your destination, and take in their unique World War II memorial, which boasts an authentic German Buzz Bomb plane atop a sculpted Vee for victory. Check out the Putnam County Museum while you’re in town, and take a leisurely backyard farm stroll through the Hobbit Gardens, outside of Fillmore, along the way. Putnam County is also host to the Hilltop Orchids and many wonderful covered bridges, such as the one pictured here.
