Mike Vanderjagt: Colts Kicker from Canada

A player for the Canadian Football League, Mike Vanderjagt started his professional football career in the CFL, but became a well-known person in Brownsburg and Hoosier in the news during a seven-year stint as a kicker for the Indianapolis Colts.

Vanderjagt’s Indianapolis sports career was a colorful one, marked by extremes. He kicked a spectacular season in 2003 for the Colts, never missing a single field goal or points-after kick, including during the playoffs. His name went down in football history, therefore, as the first NFL kicker to make that achievement.

The most extreme downside to Mike Vanderjagt’s Colts career came during the 2005 playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he cost the team their chance for overtime and effectively ended their season. With only eighteen seconds on the clock, and the Colts down 21-18, Vanderjagt went wide on a 46-yard field goal and that, as they say, was all she wrote for the Colts that year.

Though there was some bickering during sports interviews between Vanderjagt and Indianapolis Colts’ star quarterback, Peyton Manning, Vanderjagt ended up defending Manning after that catastrophic miss, on the David Letterman show, calling the QB the “Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan of football.” It was on that same show that Vanderjagt demonstrated kicking another 46-yard field goal, this time outside the studio, and this time, successful.

In 2006, Vanderjagt left Indianapolis and his then Indiana hometown, Brownsburg, to play for the Dallas Cowboys after that, as a free agent, but after one bleak season, returned to Canada and the Toronto Argonauats. Mike Vanderjagt is a native of Oakville, Ontario, born there in 1970.

Mike Vanderjagt holds two NFL records, one for 41 consecutive field goals, and the second, as all-time leading field goal present leader for his 86.4 percentage.
